The Social Justice Committee works to increase
parish awareness of the roots of social and political injustice
and to encourage members to take specific action to counter injustices.
The Social Justice Committee meets monthly to discuss issues and
decide on activities to organize, cosponsor or promote.
We have retreats and celebrations to revive our
spirits and creativity and to enable us to grow close to one another
as friends and fellow ministers. We work to maintain a vital sister-parish
relationship with the community of Nueva Trinidad, El Salvador by
sending parish delegations to El Salvador regularly and supporting
the community with our prayers and finances (through our parish
tithe and our annual Walk-a-long in October). Other activities include
bi-monthly letter-writing campaigns involving the parish in grass-roots
lobbying on a number of issues such as the death penalty, and closing
the School of the Americas; One World Crafts Fair, held on the
first weekend of November to provide self-help projects around the
world and financial assistance to Nueva Trinidad; regular collections
of needed items for organizations that serve people in our neighoborhood
and abroad who are poor and/or in crisis.
We collaborate on peace and justice efforts with other groups including
Pax Christi, The Interfaith Network of Concern for the People of
Iraq (INOC) and Salvadoran Humatarian Aid, Resources and Education
(SHARE); education opportunities such as guest speakers, videos
and other presentations that raise awarness of the ways we can combat
injustice.
