Let Haitian Refugees Stay Here: From the group Catholics United: For the past two days, we have watched in horror as the people of Haiti suffer a great deal. The fact that Haiti was already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere makes this week's earthquake all the more painful. Tens of millions of dollars are pouring into worthy charities. Governments appear to be mobilizing. Hopefully it is soon enough. One issue that still needs immediate attention is the status of Haitians in the United States. Already, the White House has "paused" deportations of Haitian refugees. The next step is to grant Haitians the immigration protections offered to victims of war or disaster - what is known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Will you take just one moment to sign our Emergency Petition to President Obama for Haitian Refugees? To sign the petition, click here TPS is granted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to refugees who cannot safely return to their home country because of armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions. This policy change has taken place before - in El Salvador, Honduras, Somalia, and Sudan. And unlike so many other issues, the president can do it himself. President Obama should instruct the Department of Homeland Security to grant Temporary Protected Status to undocumented Haitians in the United States. This will protect them from forcible deportation back to Haiti, allow them to work legally, and start the process of rebuilding and healing. A fundamental tenet of Catholic Social Teaching is care for the immigrant. That is the lesson of the story of the Good Samaritan and the stranger on the Road to Jericho. Some 80% of Haitians are Catholic. While there is a need for immigration reform on a much larger scale, the urgency of the crisis in Haiti demands immediate action. Click here to sign the petition. We're also urging other Catholic groups and the Catholic Church itself to join our call to action. Please sign. We'll keep you up to date on what is going on. Thanks for all you do. A chance for a last look back at Christmas before Lent arrives. Many (but not all) have already seen the videos I posted from the Christmas Eve family mass (perhaps via a link from my facebook page). You can find them on youtube via the links below (or you can search on youtube for videos posted by "stossdad"). I think you will enjoy viewing again this beautiful liturgy with wonderful music and performances by our youth. St Pat's Xmas Eve part 1 St Pat's Xmas Eve Part 2 St Pat's Xmas Eve Part 3 |

Our Parish Lenten Journey (Ash Wedndesday is Feb. 17) During the upcoming Lenten season, we invite the whole parish to read, reflect and pray with the book, “Prayerfulness: Awakening to the Fullness of Life” by Robert Wicks. In the book, Wicks introduces what he calls, “prayerfulness,” a way of being truly in the present to experience God and life in dynamic new ways. He offers a rich array of insights, including seven practical steps, a thirty-day retreat and a Spiritual Mindfulness Questionnaire. As a parish, we will gather twice during Lent to share our thoughts, insights and reflections on our reading and experience with “prayerfulness”. (Dates to be announced.) To order a book. please e-mail JoAn (jachoi@stpatsseattle.org)or sign up on sheet posted in vestibule. A book is available to preview. Books cost $15. |

URGENT: MALKANDI DEPORTATION IN THE WORKS; HOW YOU CAN HELP . Sam phoned Mali Fri.2/26 to let her know that Iraq has issued a passport to allow Sam to be deported back to his home country. It could happen any day now up through July 13. Officers at the NW Detention Center persuaded Sam that he should waive his right to have his attorney present and he capitulated, signing a letter saying he is willing to be deported. Mali would like anyone who is able to meet after 10 mass TOMORROW 2/28 (social hall) to talk about how we can support her fight to keep Sam in the U.S. Her attorney Bernice Funk thinks getting Sen. Patty Murray's support is critical, so letters & visits are likely to be the first best thing we can do. If you want more info/aren't able to come 2/28, feel free to call/email Mary fickes (789-3483 or mpfickes@yahoo.com). Jan Thomas, Greg Speltz, jack Smith are also good sources of information. In the meantime, Sam's atty. has filed a petition for habeus corpus. Letters of support are always neede d. See email from Mali below for Judge Martinez' address. My dear friends. St Patrick’s Day party on the 13th of March, Saturday, at 6pm in Paddy’s Place, aka Social Hall. There will be entertainment and great food! It will be a "Pot Luck" format where everyone brings an entrée, desert or salad. Parishioners with names beginning with A-K : bring a desert or salad. L-Z : bring an entree. Baked potatoes with condiments will be provided by Kathleen and David Boushey. We would especially welcome "Irish" dishes especially corn beef and/or cabbage. This event is an annual favorite with many of our parishioners and we would welcome everyone to attend. Celebrating St. Patrick's Day at St. Patrick’s Parish is a fun time and now that Paddy's Place is completely re-furbished, it will be our first St. Patrick's party in the new improved surroundings. |

Revealing Our Best Kept Secret: Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching Please join the conversation THIS WEDNESDAY, March 3 when the discussion of Pope Benedict’s recent encyclical – Charity in Truth will focus on Charity, Justice, and the Common Good. The gathering will be facilitated by Jim Thomas, using a study guide developed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org/jphd/caritasinveritate. Hope to see you there ------------------- Revealing Our Best Kept Secret: Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching Wednesdays in Lent 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. St. Pat’s Social Hall How do we live out the Gospel in today’s world? The Catholic Church provides us with guidance in its social teaching. Catholic social teaching is a collection of documents from Vatican II, papal encyclicals and other church leaders that put the Gospel into our current context. The latest of these documents was released by Pope Benedict last year and is called Charity in Truth. St. Patrick’s Social Justice and Adult Faith Development Committees are sponsoring a Lenten series that will begin with an overview of Catholic social teaching, including Charity in Truth, on Wed., Feb. 24. The series continues with a four-part discussion (March 3, 10, 17, & 24) about the main contents of Charity in Truth, especially how we are to live as Christians in a world where over half of the human population survives on less than $2 a day. After reflecting on the dire global situation, the pope calls us to adopt “new lifestyles” (no. 51). Parishioner Jim Thomas will present the overview and then facilitate the four-part discussion. Jim serves as the Director of Adult Faith Formation for Catholic Social Teaching and Family Life with the Archdiocese of Seattle. |

Please contact Molly Evans at 206-236-2024; teamevans@comcast.net if you could help and/or contribute food. For those who didn't know Pat, she was a long time parishioner who was actively involved in many ministries within the parish and beloved by all. In her healthy years, she had a special interest in making sure that parishioners who were homebound were visited and she always helped organize funeral receptions. We will make sure her funeral reception holds up to her standards! |

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. We join with our brothers and sisters in Nueva Trinidad in honoring his memory. Oscar Romero - Presente! "Throughout history, the voice of the prophet is one of the vehicles through which God speaks to the community and to the world. Today we are called to listen to the voice of a contemporary prophet, a voice that emerged from the very Americas in which we live, a voice that calls to our churches to be what God has meant us to be in a world fraught with injustice, lack of compassion, unimaginable human misery, a world racked by violence, greed, fear, and idolatry. It is a voice that compels us to listen; it is urgent because the reality it addresses is urgent. It faces us with a challenge that is both humbling and yet filled with the promise of redemption. It is the voice of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who gave his life in martyrdom for the people of El Salvador on March 24, 1980. Let us listen to that voice as it tells us what our church must be in this world. Let us open our hearts that we might repent the failings of our church, and of we who are that church, to confront the injustice in our world; let us allow ourselves to be called to become a church of prophesy, a church of prophets." (uscatholic.org/oscar_romero) Attached is the text of Greg Speltz' reflection on Romero's life and death as presented this past Sunday, which a number of folks requested.

Fr. Roy Bourgeois will be speaking this Saturday, April 10, at 2 PM. St. Marks Cathedral.. Bloedel Hall. Sponsored by Call To Action, Western Washington. "Breaking the Silence: Shatter the Stained Glass Ceiling". The subject is womens' ordination, which he supports. For those who don't know of him, he is a Maryknoll priest, founder of the School of the Americas Watch, nominated along with the SOA Watch for the Nobel Peace Prize, and has been excommunicated because of his stand for Women's Ordination. And for that reason, he would not be permitted to speak in a Catholic Church. St. Marks was gracious to welcome him on their turf. Suggested Free Will offering of $20. or as you are able. Hope to see you there. |

Your prayers are needed urgently - Sam Malkandi was put on a plane at 1 a.m. last night to be returned to Iraq. Inexplicably, Sam was removed from the plane and returned to the Tacoma Detention facility. He has now been told to be ready to be deported tonight. The suitcase Mali packed for him is gone but thankfully Sam is still here. He told one of his two guards that he believes he was not removed because "I have two children." Please support the Malkandis with your prayers. Share their story so that others become aware of the reality of ICE's tactics. Mali says that Judge Martinez of the District Court of Appeals is unlikely to consider Sam's request for habeus corpus until the order of deportation expires July 13. |

Catholic Annual Appeal: Many thanks to all the parishioners who turned in their pledge envelopes!! We are only $7,500 from our goal of $34,078. If you haven't done so already, please either send in your pledge envelope or bring the envelope to mass and drop it in the collection basket. If we don't meet our goal, St. Patrick's will have to make up the difference using Parish funds. Thank you for your generosity. |

We invite, and encourage, you to open the website 'American Catholic Council.org.' It is a very full website with numerous options for viewing. It will give you a good idea of what the ACC is, and what it hopes to achieve. In anticipation of a 'listening session' (one of many being held across the country), which we plan to have on Wed., Sept. 22, 7 PM, St. Patrick Church, Seattle, we propose some questions for you to think about: + Why are you Catholic? + What do you like about the Catholic Church? + In what ways do you see the Spirit at work in the Church? + What do you think are the biggest problem areas in the Church? + What changes would you like to see in the Church? + What is your position on the role of women in the Church? + What is your thinking about celibacy for priests? + How much do you know about the rights and responsibilities of the laity in the Church? The listening sessions being held across the country, as well as this one, are to elicit the wishes, the dreams , we Catholics have for our Church. Your responses in our session of listening/sharing will be welcomed by the planners of the Council, which will be held next year,2011, on Pentecost weekend in Detroit. Blessings, Jeanne... ennaejoc@comcast.net and Helen... ht.brennan@comcast.net |

Dear Friends, The Social Justice Committee is researching information on the threatened cuts to Social Security benefits currently being considered by the President's Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. A presentation of the topic may be presented by the Committee after sufficient information is gathered. If anyone in the parish would like to join the Committee in its search and/or review of information, please contact Carole Milan Danis or Sean Lynch. |

From Marilyn Kavanaugh: Both masses Sunday, September 5th will honor the memory of Fr. Jim Moran, a Paulist priest, who served with distinction as our 7th pastor (from 1981 until 1989). Fr. Jim died last month and recollections, stories and anecdotes from eight current and former parishioners will be recalled for us by Fr. Pat. |
